Is your Help Desk Working Efficiently?

I recently saw a bulletin from a competitor of ours entitled “Customer Support is Experiencing a Slowdown”.    It was ironic since identity management solutions can help the efficiency of help desks and IT support. Software can’t solve every help desk problem and inefficiency out there.  The problem I was reading about was like that.  We

Securing Help Desks against Hackers

To prevent being victimized by hackers, help desk workers need education and password management solutions.  Securing help desks is an important part of going beyond the simple deployment of a “password reset tool”.  In my last job before I joined the Web Active Directory team, I had to contact the help desk a few times

Student Provisioning Needs

Student Provisioning Can be a Data Management Nightmare I recently asked an IT Director of a large California school district about the most frustrating part of his job.  He didn’t say, to my surprise, something like “our legacy systems are horribly outdated” or even “we need to initiate a new SIS infrastructure”.  I was surprised when his

Active Directory Password Reset Versus Password Change

We often get questions from customers about password resets and changes in Microsoft Active Directory when the customer wants to know why password reset operations ignore certain Active Directory password policy settings like minimum password age. Web Active Directory products like PeoplePassword and IISADMPWD Replacement Tool both support password changes while only PeoplePassword supports password

Retrieve Active Directory Group Membership Information using PowerShell

We had a customer ask recently about the best way to export group members for multiple groups in LDAP. The purpose of this article is to point to resources about how to retrieve Active Directory Group Membership information using PowerShell.  This type of operation is a perfect application for PowerShell. Check out the Active Directory

Deploying Active Directory in a DMZ

We often have customers who deploy Web Active Directory applications to a DMZ hosting public-facing web servers. These applications often access an internal Active Directory behind the firewall and authenticate users from the internal Active Directory domain. This can present an enhanced security risk over internal web servers and we have some guidance for you

Efficient Queries with LDAP Search Filters

Writing LDAP queries can prove quite difficult because of its odd search filter syntax and the (mostly) non-relational nature of the LDAP data store. Even once you get your query in place, performance issues can plague your query if you don’t set it up correctly.  Efficient queries with LDAP search filters are important for performance

COM Unknown error (0x80005000) with PrincipalContext in the System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagement .NET Namespace

While working on a project recently, I ran into the very undescriptive COM Unknown error (0x80005000) trying to instantiate a PrincipalContext to use for some Active Directory management needs. To support a number of directory connection scenarios—including AD, AD LDS and the local machine SAM—our application allows admins to configure any set of relevant parameters used

ASP.NET MVC3 Razor Error CS0012: The type is defined in an assembly that is not referenced

I came across an interesting compiler error message when working on an MVC3 Razor view the other day. I needed to bind model data from a type in the .NET System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagement namespace but received the following error when the View rendered. Compiler Error Message: CS0012: The type ‘System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagement.ContextType’ is defined in an assembly that is not referenced.

Exchange 2007 PowerShell Errors with New-Mailbox Cmdlet and IIS with ASP.NET

I recently was working on a customer implementation of our PeopleProvision solution and I needed to create a new Exchange mailbox for new user accounts in Active Directory. Our customer uses Exchange 2007 and, after installing the Exchange Management Shell that includes PowerShell cmdlets used to create mailboxes, the system seemed ready to go. I kept
